What remains… Anatomy of an Artist: Call for ideas
29 Jul – 7 Sep 2015

Siobhan Davies Studios

Deadline for call for ideas: 7 September, 12pm

The WHAT festivals

The WHAT festival series showcases artists who are choosing to ask questions through and of dance. It introduces dance, performance and choreography to a wider audience.

For What remains…, the 6th WHAT festival, we want to celebrate what propels the work of both Siobhan Davies Dance and our partner organisation Independent Dance: the way in which the practice of others stimulates, refracts and transforms our own ideas, attitudes and processes. Who we are, what we do and what we make arises through our ongoing encounters with the work of others. We want to explore how excavating another artist’s practice can reveal something about our own.

Call for ideas

Edmund Locard’s basic principle of forensics is that “every contact leaves a trace”:

“Wherever he steps, whatever he touches, whatever he leaves, even unconsciously, will serve as a silent witness against him. Not only his fingerprints or his footprints, but his hair, the fibres from his clothes, the glass he breaks, the tool mark he leaves, the paint he scratches, the blood or semen he deposits or collects. All of these and more bear mute witness against him. This is evidence that does not forget. It is not confused by the excitement of the moment. It is not absent because human witnesses are. It is factual evidence. Physical evidence cannot be wrong, it cannot perjure itself, it cannot be wholly absent. Only human failure to find it, study and understand it, can diminish its value.”

Inspired by Locard’s thoughts, we invite dance artists and practitioners from other disciplines to look at the ‘anatomy’ of an artist: to examine their methods, inspirations, influences, biography or indeed their actual anatomy, and propose a way to share this with the festival audience. Rather than focusing on celebrity or adulation we encourage you to draw out specific traces of their lives and practices.

Applicants will propose a format to share their investigation with the festival audience. This can include performance, intervention, discussion, workshop, lecture, film, presentation, digital, walk & talk, publication or other audience-facing ways of sharing.

Proposals will be shortlisted by a panel and invited for interview. The panel consists of Kirsty Alexander (co-director, ID), Kate Coyne (programme director, SDD), Frank Bock (independent artist and ID curator), Florence Peake (independent artist), Gitta Wigro (co-director, ID).

The final selection will be made on the basis of the relevance and imagination of the idea, the overall balance and shape of the programme, and the ability to realise it fully within the budget and the practical givens of the festival and the space.
